BNY Mellon Jazz Presents: A Gala Tribute to Joe Negri

Saturday, October 1, 2011

Legendary jazz guitarist and beloved Pittsburgh icon Joe Negri drew an audience of more than 350 people to the Chartiers Valley Partnership’s final benefit. A luminous line-up of guest artists took the stage to honor Joe. Roger Humphreys on drums, Sean Jones on trumpet and Mike Tomaro on sax joined Joe’s top caliber trio: Max Leake on piano, Tom Wendt on drums and Tony DiPaolis on bass. Michele Benson, a last minute substitute for ailing vocalist Maureen Budway, captivated the audience, with her lush and soulful singing. Essential Public Radio 90.5 FM’s Bob Studebaker served as the evening’s emcee.
Joe and his extraordinary musical cohorts would still be playing if the audience had its way! Accolades rained down. But the Library & Music Hall was swinging long after the concert ended with the after-party that took place on three floors. The new Studio made its debut as “urban hipster club space.” The ACFL&MH’s old basement gym was transformed by mood lighting and a jam session presented by Carnegie’s own Haywood and Friends. And “bellying up to the circ desk” for food and libations delighted “Carnegie Carnegie” supporters. The benefit raised more than $61,000 and introduced the Library & Music Hall to myriad new friends.
Heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this deserved tribute to Joe Negri the talk of the town!

Marianne Cornetti Returns to Carnegie Carnegie Hall

October 2, 2010

World-renowned mezzo soprano Marianne Cornetti returned to the Music Hall for the Chartiers Valley Partnerships annual benefit. The Pittsburgh Post Gazette named her first performance five years ago “one of the top-ten classical performances of 2005.” Ms. Cornetti dazzled an audience of more than 200 with an eclectic program that featured not only arias from the opera canon, but Italian songs, show tunes and spirituals as well. Marianne delighted audiences with her warmth and wit in remarks introducing the songs, almost adding an element of cabaret to the evening. Pittsburgh Opera’s Chorus Master Mark Trawka provided perfect accompaniment and the rare bonus of his solo performance Schubert’s Impromptu in G-Flat Major. WQED’s Jim Cunningham graciously warmed up an audience who came for Marianne’s glorious singing and went away 100% satisfied!
